Start from Standards, Not Machines
List the product standards you certify to and the customer specifications you must satisfy; each test clause names its method (ASTM/ISO/IS), and each method dictates the machine, capacity, fixtures and accuracy class. This sequence prevents both classic mistakes: the under-specified machine that fails an audit, and the over-specified one that wastes budget. Specifications That Actually Matter
- Accuracy class and range — the method states required accuracy (e.g. ±1 % of load); verify the machine meets it across your working range, not just at full scale.
- Compliance by design — heating rates, jaw dimensions, striker geometry and die tolerances are fixed by the standards; ask the manufacturer to state compliance clause by clause.
- Calibration and documentation — machines must ship with traceable calibration certificates; for export businesses, documentation quality is part of the product.
- Serviceability — spares availability, local support and operator training determine lifetime cost far more than purchase price.
- Honest data practices — instruments should export raw data; auditors increasingly ask for it.
Evaluating a Manufacturer
