How to Set Up a Plastic Testing Laboratory: Equipment, Layout & Budget Phases

Every plastics processor eventually reaches the same conclusion: outside laboratories are too slow for production decisions. The fix is an in-house lab — but built in the right order, so each rupee of equipment spend removes the largest remaining blind spot. Having equipped laboratories across 60+ countries since 1971, here is the sequence we recommend.

Phase 1: Material Identity (the first bench)

• MFI Tester — is the resin what the bag says, and has processing degraded it?
• Density Apparatus — grade and filler verification in minutes.
• Moisture Analyser — the cheapest prevention of splay, voids and hydrolysis.

These three catch the majority of raw-material incidents and pay for themselves with the first rejected lot they intercept.

Phase 2: Mechanical Properties

Add a Universal Testing Machine with grips for your products, an Izod/Charpy Impact Tester with notch cutter, and the sample preparation chain — hydraulic press, contour cutter, conditioning. This phase turns the lab from gatekeeper into development tool: new recipes, regrind ratios and cost-down trials can now be qualified internally. Product-specific instruments follow — thermal (VSP/HDT, ovens, muffle furnace) for polymer and rubber work, or the pipe and film benches covered in our dedicated checklists.

Room, Records and People

• Environment — a conditioned room at 23 ± 2 °C / 50 ± 5 % RH; without it, half your test standards are technically void.
• Utilities — stable power (UPS for electronics), water for density/hydrostatic work, nitrogen for OIT/carbon black content, ventilation for furnaces.
• Calibration — annual traceable calibration of every instrument, with certificates filed; auditors ask for these before they ask for results.
