The most important QC test in the polymer industry

A Melt Flow Index Tester — also called an MFI tester, melt indexer or extrusion plastometer — measures the flow rate of a molten thermoplastic through a standard orifice under a set temperature and load. The result, in grams per 10 minutes, is one of the most important quality parameters in the plastic and polymer industry.

MFI values let manufacturers identify a polymer grade, confirm batch-to-batch consistency, check the effect of additives and verify that incoming raw material matches specification before production. How the test works

Step by step

  1. Set temperature & loadSelect the ASTM/ISO test temperature and standard weight for your polymer and let the barrel stabilise.
  2. Charge the barrelLoad the pre-weighed polymer, compact it and preheat for the specified time.
  3. Apply the weightPlace the load; the molten polymer extrudes through the standard orifice.
  4. Cut & measureMethod A — cut the extrudate at fixed intervals and weigh each cut. Method B — a displacement sensor tracks piston travel for MVR & melt density.
  5. Calculate the resultMFR (g/10 min), MVR (cc/10 min) and melt density are computed, and on computerized models stored, averaged and reported.

Standards covered

Every MFI tester complies with ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133, plus IS 2530 and IS 10810 for Indian standards, and is supplied with a traceable calibration certificate. Method A measures Melt Flow Rate (MFR) by cutting and weighing the extrudate; Method B adds Melt Volume Rate (MVR) and melt density via a piston-travel sensor.

What is the difference between Test Method A and Test Method B of ASTM D1238?
Method A measures Melt Flow Rate (MFR) by cutting the extruded polymer at fixed intervals and weighing it — best for polymers below 50 g/10 min. Method B uses a piston-travel displacement sensor to calculate Melt Volume Rate (MVR) and melt density — required above 50 g/10 min. Our Computerized (Method A & B) model supports both in one instrument.
Which MFI tester model should I buy for my plant?
For a small QC lab, the manual KAYJAY/2005/CE is the most economical. For continuous production QC, the KAYJAY/2006/AC with motorised auto-cutting. For R&D or a wide MFI range, the Computerized (Method A & B) measures MFR, MVR and melt density together.
What is the temperature range of your MFI tester?
All models operate from ambient to 400 °C with 0.1 °C resolution and ±0.1 °C accuracy, controlled by a microprocessor auto-tuned PID controller.
Do you provide installation, training and calibration?
Yes — free online installation and on-site operator training as per contract, a calibration certificate with every machine, and annual calibration visits for long-term support.
