A Universal Testing Machine works by applying a controlled, steadily increasing force to a test specimen held between two grips while sensors record the load and the resulting deformation. A computerized twin-screw UTM from International Equipments uses a 32-bit microcontroller with closed-loop control to move the crosshead at a precise speed between 0.5 and 800 mm/min. As the specimen is stretched, compressed or bent, the load cell measures force and the software plots a stress-strain curve in real time, automatically calculating peak load, break load, percentage elongation, tensile strength, and secant, tangent and flexural modulus.
In plastics and polymer laboratories, the UTM is used to check the tensile and elongation properties of moulded parts, films and sheets to ASTM D638, D882 and ISO 527, the compressive strength of rigid components to ASTM D695, and the three-point flexural strength to ASTM D790. Pipe manufacturers use it for ring stiffness and tensile testing of HDPE, PVC and PPR pipes, while packaging labs use it for seal strength, peel and bond testing of laminates and pouches. Textile and woven-sack producers rely on the same frame to measure the breaking strength of tapes, cords and yarns.
When selecting a Universal Testing Machine, the most important decision is load capacity: choose a machine where your expected peak force falls between roughly 20% and 80% of the load-cell rating, so that measurements stay in the accurate zone of the sensor. International Equipments offers capacities up to 5000 kg with single or dual load-cell options. The Servo model, with its closed-loop servo drive, suits R&D and precision laboratories needing the widest speed range, while the more economical Vector (VFD) model is ideal for routine production and incoming-material quality control.
South Africa's plastics-processing, rubber-product, automotive and mining industries maintain active testing laboratories working to SANS and ISO standards. International Equipments supplies CE-certified Universal Testing Machines, MFI testers, impact testers and the full polymer range to South African manufacturers, compliant with ISO 1133 and ISO 527. Complete export documentation, calibration certificates and remote training support smooth commissioning across the region.
