Overview

Measure the toughness of rigid plastics

Impact strength predicts how a rigid plastic survives sudden shocks — a dropped part, a knock on a pipe or panel. A calibrated pendulum is raised to a fixed 150° release angle and swung to strike a notched specimen; the energy absorbed in breaking it is the impact energy, in Joules. The notch concentrates stress for repeatable, comparable results.

International Equipments builds the tester in Computerised and Analogue variants: Izod clamps the specimen vertically as a cantilever (notch facing the strike), while Charpy supports it horizontally at both ends. Both comply with ASTM D256, D6110, ISO 179/180 and IS 13208/13360. Manufactured in Mumbai, CE marked and calibration-certified.

Computerised Model — up to 25 J

Microcontroller + PC: up to 25 J (50 J on request), five interchangeable scales, automatic unit conversion, an Impact Energy vs Angular Displacement graph and printable ASTM/ISO/IS reports — for ISO 9001 / NABL labs.

Analogue Model — up to 21.68 J

Pendulum-and-pointer tester read directly from a calibrated mechanical scale — the economical choice for small QC labs, polytechnic colleges and ITI institutes.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Notch the specimenMachine a standard V-notch with the motorized notch cutter and verify it with the micro-meter jig.
  2. Mount & select scaleClamp as a cantilever (Izod) or simply-supported beam (Charpy); select the pendulum and scale for the expected energy.
  3. Release the pendulumRaise the pendulum to the 150° release angle and release; it strikes the specimen.
  4. Read the resultImpact energy is shown on the microcontroller, and graphed and reported on the PC (Computerised model).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Izod and Charpy tests?
Izod clamps the specimen vertically as a cantilever with the notch facing the pendulum (ASTM D256, ISO 180); Charpy supports it horizontally at both ends with the notch away from the strike (ASTM D6110, ISO 179). This tester does both by changing the mounting fixture.
Should I buy the Computerised or Analogue model?
Choose Computerised for digital reports, graphs and 25 J capacity (ISO 9001 / NABL labs); choose Analogue for an economical, reliable tester in small QC labs, polytechnics or ITIs. Both meet the same ASTM and ISO standards.
Why is the release angle always 150°?
ASTM D256 and ISO 180 specify a fixed release angle so the striking energy is consistent across all laboratories; 150° provides the standardised potential energy required.
Do I need a notch cutter separately?
Yes — a precise machined V-notch (about 2.54 mm deep, 0.25 mm radius) is essential, so we recommend the Motorized Notch Cutter and the Micro-meter Jig for notch verification.
