A muffle furnace provides high, uniform temperatures — typically up to 1000 °C or more — in a chamber isolated from combustion products, for ash-content, carbon-content and incineration tests. Resistance heating elements surround an insulated muffle chamber, and a PID controller holds the set temperature precisely, allowing repeatable high-temperature testing of polymers, pipe materials and compounds.
In the plastics industry the muffle furnace is central to ash-content determination (which reveals filler and inorganic content) and to carbon black content testing of HDPE pipe. It is also used for loss-on-ignition and general incineration work in pipe, compound and quality-control laboratories, supporting ASTM D1603 and ISO 6964.
