A peel tester measures the force required to separate two bonded layers — such as a lidding film from a container, a laminate ply from its substrate, or an adhesive tape from a surface. The sample is gripped in two jaws and pulled apart at a controlled angle (typically 90° or 180°) and constant speed while a load cell records the peel force along the length of the seal. The result, expressed in grams or Newtons per unit width, characterises seal strength, bond strength and adhesion quality.
Peel and seal-strength testing is critical for flexible-packaging converters, pharmaceutical blister-pack producers, food-packaging manufacturers and adhesive-tape makers. It confirms that heat seals are strong enough to survive transport yet peel cleanly for the end user, that laminates will not delaminate, and that pressure-sensitive adhesives meet specification. Standards commonly applied include ASTM F88 (seal strength), ASTM D1876 (T-peel) and ISO 11339.
When choosing a peel tester, consider whether you need a dedicated low-force digital instrument or whether peel testing can be performed on your Universal Testing Machine with the appropriate grips and software.
