A combined VSP / HDT apparatus measures two key thermal properties of plastics. In the Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) test a specimen under a constant flexural load is heated in an oil bath at a uniform rate until it deflects by a standard amount; the temperature at that point is the HDT. In the Vicat Softening Point (VSP) test a loaded needle penetrates the specimen as it is heated, and the temperature at a standard penetration is the VSP. Both indicate the temperature at which a plastic begins to soften under load.
