Carbon black dispersion testing evaluates how evenly carbon black particles are distributed through the polyethylene matrix, using optical microscopy. Thin microtomed sections of the pipe or compound are examined under a microscope and compared against standard reference charts to assign a dispersion grade (A to E) per ISO 18553. Good dispersion is essential — even with correct carbon black content, poorly dispersed agglomerates create weak points that shorten pipe life.
Every HDPE pipe and fitting manufacturer, and every masterbatch producer supplying carbon black masterbatch, must demonstrate acceptable dispersion to ISO 18553, ASTM D5596 and IS 12235. The test complements carbon black content testing and is required for BIS certification of pressure pipe.
The essential equipment is a good-quality optical microscope with the correct magnification, a microtome to prepare thin sections, and the ISO 18553 reference charts for grading.
