

An apparatus that rates the dispersion of carbon black in polyethylene to IS 4984 and IS 4985 — a thin melted film on a hot plate is examined under a projection microscope.
Carbon black only protects polyethylene if it is evenly dispersed — agglomerates leave UV-weak spots and act as flaws that initiate cracking. So pipe and geomembrane standards require both a minimum content and a dispersion rating.
International Equipments builds a dispersion apparatus where a thin film is melted on an 8 inch hot plate (ambient to 200 °C) and examined under a projection microscope at 100X and 450X on a 6 inch screen, then rated against IS 4984 and IS 4985.
