Falling Weight Impact on Pipes
A striker of defined mass and nose radius is dropped from a specified height onto pipe samples rotated between blows so impacts distribute around the circumference. Standards such as IS 4985 define the true impact rate concept: the batch passes when the fraction of failures stays below the allowed percentage. Because impact resistance collapses with temperature, specimens are conditioned — commonly at 0 °C in a zero-degree chamber — and struck within seconds of removal.
Seat Impact and Back Punch for Fittings
- Seat impact test — a weight falls onto the socket/seat area of a fitting, proving the thickest, most stress-concentrated zone survives handling shocks.
- Back punch impact test — the striker hits the crown or back of the fitting, targeting weld lines and flow marks where mouldings are weakest.
- Why both — fittings fail differently from pipes: gate location, weld lines and wall transitions create local weak points that only fitting-specific impact tests expose.
Reading and Acting on Impact Failures
Brittle, glassy fracture surfaces point to over-aged material, excessive filler or cold mould temperatures; ductile bruising without cracking is what a healthy product shows. Track failure rate by cavity and by resin lot — impact testing is often the first place a gelation problem (PVC) or contamination issue announces itself. Cross-check suspicious lots with pendulum impact tests on moulded specimens.
