Hydrostatic Pressure Testing of Plastic Pipes: The Definitive Guide

A pressure pipe's entire purpose is to hold pressure for decades — and hydrostatic pressure testing is how that claim is proven. Standards such as ISO 1167, IS 4985 (PVC), IS 4984 (HDPE) and PPR pipe specifications all require pipe samples to withstand defined internal pressures at defined temperatures for defined durations: from 1-hour type tests to 1000-hour long-term tests.

The laboratory hardware is a Hydrostatic Pressure Testing Panel feeding pressurised water to specimens immersed in a temperature-controlled SS Tank.

How the Test Works

Pipe samples are cut to the standard's free length, fitted with end caps, filled with water and conditioned. The panel then applies a calculated internal pressure — derived from the required hoop stress, pipe diameter and wall thickness — and holds it, automatically compensating for any creep expansion. The specimen passes if it survives the full duration without bursting, ballooning or leaking.

Panel and Tank Essentials

Look for independent stations so a failure on one specimen doesn't abort neighbours, pressure control within the standard's tolerance (typically ±1–2 %), automatic timers and failure detection per station, and data logging for certification audits. The SS tank must hold water temperature within ±1 °C for weeks — insulation quality and circulation design decide running cost. For cold-climate export product, a Zero Degree Chamber adds sub-zero conditioning capability.
