Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) Testing: Why Every PE Pipe Plant Needs It

Polyethylene pipes are designed for 50-year service lives — but only if the antioxidant package in the resin survives compounding and extrusion. Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) is the standard laboratory measure of that remaining stabiliser protection, and it is a mandatory test in PE pressure-pipe standards worldwide, including IS 4984, ISO 4437 and ISO 1167-related specifications.

How the OIT Test Works

A small specimen taken from the pipe wall is heated to a set temperature — typically 200 °C or 210 °C — under inert nitrogen. Once stable, the atmosphere is switched to oxygen and the clock starts. The antioxidants sacrifice themselves protecting the polymer; when they are exhausted, oxidation begins as a sharp exothermic event. The elapsed time from oxygen switch to exotherm onset is the OIT, reported in minutes.

A long OIT means healthy stabiliser reserves; a short OIT warns that the resin was over-processed, contaminated, or under-stabilised — and that the pipe may fail brittle long before its rated life.

What is a typical minimum OIT requirement for PE pipes?
Many PE pressure pipe standards specify a minimum of 20 minutes at 200 °C on specimens taken from the finished pipe, but always confirm the exact figure in the standard your product is certified to.
Does OIT predict the exact service life of a pipe?
Not directly - OIT is a comparative measure of remaining stabiliser. It screens material quality and process damage rather than calculating years of life.
Why is nitrogen used at the start of the test?
The inert purge lets the specimen reach and stabilise at the test temperature without consuming antioxidants, so the timed oxidation phase starts from a defined state.
Can OIT be tested on fittings and granules as well as pipes?
Yes - granules, compounds, pipe wall specimens and moulded fittings are all routinely tested, and comparing them reveals how much stabiliser each processing step consumed.
