Overview

Verify the UV protection built into the polymer

Carbon black protects polyethylene pipes, cables and geomembranes from UV degradation, and standards specify a minimum content (commonly around 2–2.5%). To measure it, the polymer is pyrolysed under inert gas in the furnace so the polymer burns off, leaving the carbon black and ash, which are then weighed.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Weigh the sampleWeigh the polymer sample into the combustion boat.
  2. PyrolyseHeat the sample in the combustion tube under inert gas flow (set on the rotameter) in the furnace.
  3. Collect residueThe polymer burns off; carbon black and ash remain in the boat.
  4. Weigh & calculateWeigh the residue and calculate the carbon black content as a percentage by mass.
