
A pyrolysis apparatus that determines the carbon black content of polyethylene and other plastics to ASTM D1603, IS 4984 and IS 2530 — the mandatory UV check for pipes, cables and geomembranes.
Carbon black protects polyethylene pipes, cables and geomembranes from UV degradation, and standards specify a minimum content (commonly around 2–2.5%). To measure it, the polymer is pyrolysed under inert gas in the furnace so the polymer burns off, leaving the carbon black and ash, which are then weighed.
International Equipments builds a carbon black content apparatus with a furnace reaching 1150 °C and the full glassware train — combustion tube and boat, U-tube, rotameter, traps and desiccator — for the gravimetric determination to ASTM D1603, IS 4984 and IS 2530.
