Overview

A repeatable notch is half the impact test

Izod and Charpy impact results are extremely sensitive to the notch — its depth, angle and tip radius control where the specimen fractures. Hand-notching introduces scatter that can invalidate a whole set of results, so the notch is machined to a defined 45° geometry.

International Equipments builds the notch cutter with a Mitutoyo depth micrometer (0–25 mm, 0.01 mm least count) for accurate depth setting, in a Standard model and a Variable-Speed model with a Vector-Controlled Variable Speed Drive. Manufactured in Mumbai, CE marked and calibration-certified.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Set the notch depthSet the required notch depth using the Mitutoyo depth micrometer (0.01 mm least count).
  2. Clamp the specimenHold the impact bar securely in the fixture.
  3. Cut the notchThe 45° cutter machines the standard V-notch into the specimen.
  4. VerifyCheck the finished notch depth with the micro-meter jig.
