Overview

Confirm pipes block light as the standard requires

For HDPE and other plastic pipes, opacity matters: a pipe that lets light through allows algae to grow inside and degrades faster in sunlight, so standards set a minimum opaqueness. IS 4985 and IS 12235 (Part 3) specify checking the opaqueness of the pipe wall.

International Equipments builds a digital opacity tester that reads the percentage opacity of a plastic sample directly, from 0 to 99.9% opaque — a fast QC check on pigment and carbon-black loading. Manufactured in Mumbai, CE marked and calibration-certified.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Prepare the sampleCut a section of the pipe wall or plastic sheet to the required size.
  2. Place in the testerPosition the sample in the measuring aperture.
  3. Read % opaqueThe tester displays the opaqueness directly, from 0 to 99.9%.
  4. Compare to specCheck the reading against the minimum opacity in IS 4985 / IS 12235 (Part 3).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why measure the opacity of pipes?
A pipe that transmits light allows algae growth inside and degrades faster in sunlight, so IS 4985 and IS 12235 (Part 3) require a minimum opaqueness — the tester confirms the pipe blocks enough light.
What range does it read?
From 0 to 99.9% opaque, displayed directly as a percentage.
Which standards does it follow?
IS 4985 and IS 12235 (Part 3) for the opaqueness of plastic pipe samples.
Do you export it with documentation?
Yes — CE marked, voltage-configured and shipped with a calibration certificate to 60+ countries.
