Overview

How long polyethylene resists cracking under stress

Polyethylene bottles, pipes and containers can crack over time when stress and a surface-active chemical act together, even below the yield strength. ESCR measures this: notched strips are bent into a holder, immersed in a surfactant solution at a controlled temperature, and the time for specimens to crack is recorded.

International Equipments builds an ESCR apparatus designed as per ASTM D1693 with 6 stations and a stainless-steel inner bath operating from ambient to 200 °C, so a wide range of ESCR conditions can be set. Every unit ships with the specimen-preparation kit — cutting die, nicking jig, bending-cum-transfer tool, aluminium foil, and 6 nos. each of specimen holders, test tubes and rubber corks — so labs can start testing on delivery. Manufactured in Mumbai, CE marked and calibration-certified.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Cut & notch specimensCut the specimens with the cutting die and notch them using the nicking jig.
  2. Bend into holdersBend the notched strips into the specimen holders using the bending-cum-transfer tool.
  3. Immerse in surfactantPlace the holders inside test tubes with surfactant solution, seal with rubber corks and put them in the bath.
  4. Hold at temperatureHold the bath at the set temperature (typically 50 °C for standard ESCR).
  5. Record time to failureRecord the time at which each specimen cracks; results are commonly reported as F0 or F50 (time for 50% of specimens to fail).
