Overview

The core mechanical test for films and plastics

Tensile testing is the fundamental mechanical check for films, plastics and rubber — a specimen is pulled at a constant speed until it breaks, giving tensile strength, elongation and modulus. ASTM D882 covers thin films, ASTM D638 (ISO 527) rigid plastics and ASTM D412 rubber.

International Equipments builds a single-column computerised tensile machine with built-in programs for peel, bond and cyclic-endurance testing (by time, counts, load or extension), auto-stop and auto-reverse. Results show on the microcontroller and stream to a PC for Load-vs-elongation graphs, averaging and standard deviation. Manufactured in Mumbai, CE marked and calibration-certified.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Cut & mount the specimenCut the specimen to the standard geometry and clamp it in the appropriate grips.
  2. Set the methodSelect tensile (or peel/bond/cyclic), speed and load cell; zero the load and extension.
  3. Run the testThe crosshead moves at constant speed while the microcontroller records load vs extension; it auto-stops at break and auto-reverses.
  4. Read resultsPeak/break load, tensile strength, yield, % elongation and Young's modulus are shown on the display and graphed on the PC.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ASTM D882 and D638?
ASTM D882 is for thin films tested as strips; ASTM D638 (ISO 527) is for rigid plastics using dumbbell specimens. This machine supports both, plus ASTM D412 for rubber, with the appropriate grips.
Which grips suit thin film?
Pneumatic, roller and self-tightening grips are best for thin film — they hold without slipping or cutting the specimen. A full grip set is supplied.
Does it do more than tensile?
Yes — built-in programs run peel, bond and cyclic-endurance tests by time, counts, load or extension, with auto-stop and auto-reverse.
What load capacity is available?
Up to 500 kg as standard, with other capacities supplied on request; a single load cell is fitted.
