What this covers

HDPE PLB duct is the protective conduit, buried about one metre underground, through which Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) is pneumatically blown using high-velocity cable-blowing equipment. The duct's silicon pre-lubricated internal surface minimises abrasion during blowing, and then protects the fibre for decades against moisture, rodents and excavation damage.

Because the duct is buried and must perform for 50+ years, the Department of Telecommunication (DOT) mandates one of the most stringent testing regimes in Indian plastics. Which instruments are essential for DOT-acceptance testing?

The DOT-essential set is: Hydrostatic Pressure Panel + SS Tank + End Caps; OIT Apparatus; Carbon Black Content + Dispersion; UTM; Melt Flow Index Tester; Digital Density Apparatus; ESCR Apparatus; Impact Tester + Zero Degree Chamber; Muffle Furnace and Contour Cutter. Without any one of these, DOT acceptance testing cannot be completed in-house.

What is the internal coefficient of friction test on PLB duct?

It measures friction between the inner wall of the HDPE PLB duct and the outer surface of the Optical Fibre Cable during blowing. High values predict that cable blowing will stall before reaching the design distance (1+ km), causing project delays. The test uses a UTM with a specialised PLB fixture — not standard plastic-on-plastic COF (ASTM D1894).

Size by duct diameter and parallel tests: 500–1000 L for 16–40 mm subduct; 1000–2000 L for 40–110 mm mid-range; 2000–3000 L up to 200 mm; 3000–4000 L for primary trunk duct or 8-station parallel operation.
