Testing Equipment for Recycled Plastics

A complete laboratory solution for recycled polymer granule QC and re-qualification — covering recycled HDPE, LDPE, PP, PET, PVC, ABS and mixed-polymer streams. Two-tier framework: entry-level instruments test granules directly; specialised instruments require moulded specimens.

Overview

What this covers

Recycling subjects polymers to secondary heat treatment that causes chain scission, oxidative stress and additive depletion. Before recycled granules can be used downstream — pipe, film, moulded parts — the recycler must re-qualify them against the properties the next converter needs. That re-qualification is what a recycled-plastics QC lab delivers.

International Equipments supplies the equipment in two tiers. The entry tier (MFI, Density, Muffle Furnace, Moisture) runs directly on granules and gives the fastest incoming-batch verification. The specialised tier (UTM, VSP/HDT, Izod/Charpy, Notch Cutter) requires moulded specimens and gives full mechanical and thermal property re-qualification.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum QC lab for a recycling plant?
Four-instrument entry-level package: Melt Flow Index Tester, Digital Density Apparatus, Muffle Furnace and Moisture Analyser. All four tests can be performed directly on granules — no moulded specimens needed — giving the fastest route to incoming-batch QC for recycled HDPE, PP, PET, PVC and ABS.
Why does recycling change polymer properties?
Secondary heat treatment during recycling causes chain scission, oxidative stress and additive depletion. Tensile strength, elongation and impact strength all drop versus virgin material. The same instrument types used for virgin resin (UTM, Izod/Charpy, VSP/HDT) measure the degraded properties, letting the recycler re-grade the material for appropriate downstream use.
Can the same equipment test virgin and recycled polymer?
Yes. The instruments measure actual material properties regardless of the polymer's history. Many virgin-resin plants also run occasional reprocess batches on the same equipment — one lab serves both streams.
How important is carbon black content for recycled streams?
Critical when mixing carbon-loaded scrap (black-pipe HDPE, UV-stabilised compounds) with natural-coloured recyclate — contamination will prevent downstream use in colour-sensitive applications. The Carbon Black Content Apparatus (pyrolysis per ASTM D1603) gives a quantitative check.
