Overview

Every melt-flow parameter, fully automatically

The flagship model runs both ASTM D1238 methods in one instrument. Method A gives Melt Flow Rate by automatic cutting and weighing; Method B uses a piston-travel displacement sensor to derive Melt Volume Rate and melt density — essential for high-MFI polymers above 50 g/10 min and for full material characterisation.

With automatic loading, cutting, weighing and PC-based analysis, it is the choice for R&D laboratories and labs testing a wide MFI range. Manufactured in Mumbai, CE marked and supplied with a calibration certificate.

How the test works

Step by step

  1. Set temperature & loadSelect the ASTM/ISO test temperature and standard weight for your polymer and let the barrel stabilise.
  2. Charge the barrelLoad the pre-weighed polymer, compact it and preheat for the specified time.
  3. Apply the weightPlace the load; the molten polymer extrudes through the standard orifice.
  4. Cut & measureMethod A — cut the extrudate at fixed intervals and weigh each cut. Method B — a displacement sensor tracks piston travel for MVR & melt density.
  5. Calculate the resultMFR (g/10 min), MVR (cc/10 min) and melt density are computed, and on computerized models stored, averaged and reported.

Standards covered

Every MFI tester complies with ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133, plus IS 2530 and IS 10810 for Indian standards, and is supplied with a traceable calibration certificate. Method A measures Melt Flow Rate (MFR) by cutting and weighing the extrudate; Method B adds Melt Volume Rate (MVR) and melt density via a piston-travel sensor.

Frequently asked questions

Why measure MVR and melt density, not just MFR?
MVR (Method B) is required for high-MFI polymers above 50 g/10 min where cutting-and-weighing becomes inaccurate, and melt density lets you convert between MFR and MVR — giving full material characterisation in one test.
How does Method B work?
A linear displacement sensor measures piston travel as the polymer extrudes, from which Melt Volume Rate and melt density are calculated automatically — no cutting or weighing required.
